Northumberland is the most northerly county of England and one of the largest but least densely populated. This history begins with the formation of Northumberland County Fire Brigade in 1948 and documents the efforts to attain continuity and progress in the face of post-war austerity measures. From this period on, it describes the appliances, premises and activities of the organisation and some of the many people responsible for the fire brigade’s development and professionalism. Local government reorganisation in 1974 transferred some towns to the new Tyne & Wear metropolitan county and, with further fire service mergers now  planned, the author hopes this fifty year history will serve as a lasting tribute to those who have contributed to the making of what is now the Northumberland Fire & Rescue Service.            160 pages, over 150 black & white illustrations.
