When he researched and wrote this book Alan House was Deputy Chief Officer of Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service. He is the voluntary service historian and archivist  for Hampshire FRS and archivist for the British Fire Services Association. The purpose of his book is to identify the types of vehicles used by the Auxiliary Fire Service and the National Fire Service from the preparation for World War 2 until the demise of the NFS in 1948. Ex-regular appliances of the local authority brigades are deliberately not  included and, as the author does not set himself up as an expert on vehicle types, he has chosen not to record too much detail of engines and chassis variations etc. Indeed, as he says, official records often add to the confusion of terminology used for vehicle types and makes.

Soft cover, A4 format, 593 pages, approx 450 black & white illustrations
