Thanet's Victorian Fire Brigades

and a little local history                                       #028

by Robert Varnham

Chapter One: The Early Years, 1860 to 1869

Chapter Two: An Incendiarist in Margate, 1870 to 1879

Chapter Three: Two Serious Conflagrations, 1880 to 1889

Chapter Four: The Age of Competition, 1890 to 1900

This book is based on articles of the time published in the Margate based newspaper Kentish Gazette, later renamed Keble's Gazette. The information follows the pattern of a diary recording events as they occur.

Bob Varnham served as a fireman in the Kent Fire Brigade for 30 years before retiring in 1989. His interest in local history led him into researching Thanet's early fire brigades and their origins, and "a little local history" is included in the book to put events into context.
