Kent Fire Brigade provided long duration breathing apparatus sets at Folkestone in order to ensure sufficient underground working time in the event of an incident during construction of the Channel Tunnel. These were carried in a breathing apparatus unit specially built by Glover Webb in 1988 and seen here mounted on Ford Cargo D1624 prime mover E831 XKE.

Specialist and heavy rescue equipment was also required to provide adequate cover for the Channel Tunnel workings. This 1989 emergency tunnel unit by Fulton & Wylie based at Folkestone was pictured while mounted on the Ford Cargo 1720 prime mover G183 OKE.

Two foam units fitted out by John Dennis Coachbuilders were the last of the demountable bodies to be taken into service. They were put on the run in 1994 at Strood and Dover but both were moved to Ashford in 2002. Strood’s is seen here carried by Ford D1624 prime mover D183 KKO.
