The Channel Tunnel comprises two running tunnels, one in each direction, with a service tunnel between. The Service Tunnel Transport System (STTS) is based on 1993 Mercedes-powered units with a driving cab at each end and interchangeable body units for fire, ambulance, police and maintenance purposes.

Four STTS fire appliances, with bodies by John Dennis Coachbuilders, are stationed at each of the English and French terminals.

Two appliances at each end of the tunnel, each with a crew of four, carry firefighting and rescue equipment. Two others at each end, with accommodation for twelve crew, can be used to ferry personnel and equipment from supporting Kent and Calais appliances.
