Water was also being pumped into the River Don by the local water company and the Environment Agency at the village of Barnaby Dun.
With Thorpe power station in the background, the Derbyshire crews manning these high
volume pumps were pumping into the River Don.
The actual pumps from each high volume pumping unit are submersible, as seen here at Bentley, and are driven hydraulically. They can be positioned up to 60 metres from the diesel power unit contained within the demountable module.
The hose is retrieved with the aid of a powered unit which lifts the hose from the
ground, cleans it and feeds it back to the hose box as the vehicle moves forward
at 2.5 mph. It is still necessary for two firefighters to be in the hose box to flake
