The Fire Services Act (Northern Ireland) 1947 created four fire authorities for Northern Ireland effective from 1 January 1948
Northern Ireland Fire Brigade
now known as
Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service
On 1 April 1950, apart from Belfast county borough which reverted to a municipal brigade, the province became protected by the Northern Ireland Fire Authority.

Effective from 1 October 1973
On 1 October 1973, pursuant to the Fire Services (Northern Ireland) Order 1972, the Belfast Fire Brigade and the Northern Ireland Fire Authority amalgamated.
